Why social media are important…

Here’s a few statistics that explain why:

  • By March 2006, 84 million Americans had broadband at home, a 40% jump from 2005 figures
  • By March 2006, some 48 million Americans were regular online content creators
  • By the end of 2005, 139 million people in the world had a DSL (broadband) connection
  • In 2005, $6.7 billion worth of digital cameras were sold in the U.S.
  • About 41% of all cell phone owners use them as content tools
  • By the end of 2005, just over 1 billion people were online — that’s 1/6th of the world
  • Asia represents the world’s most populous online segment
  • By July 2006, 50 million blogs had been created and their number was doubling every 6 months
  • About 7,200 new blogs are created every hour
  • By 2006, 10 million people were listening to podcasts in 2006; by 2010, it’s expected to be 50 million people
  • About 100 million videos are viewed every day on YouTube; about 65,000 videos are uploaded every day
  • In 2006, MySpace had over 100 million registered members, most of them from the U.S.
  • In early 2007, Digg had 900,000 members and 20 million visitors per month
  • About 28% of online Americans have tagged a photo, news story or blog post; about 7% of all American Internet users tag content every day

Here we go again…

Well I’ve decided it’s time to get back on the stick and start posting again. Seems like when things get busy something has to go and the blog ends up being the one to go. Either things are settling down (not a chance) or I’m just missing the blog (more likely). The truth is I enjoy playing with the themes, plug-ins, upgrades, etc. of WordPress much more than the writing. Regardless, I’ve got a new look and a bunch of new plug-ins so here we go again.

WordPress 2.0 Release on December 26

WordPress 2.0 Release on December 26
Filed under: WordPress, Release — Dougal @ 11:09 pm
In response to concerns about availability of support over the
Christmas holiday, the release of WordPress 2.0 has been delayed until
December 26. This will allow all the fine helpers who answer questions
in the forums and on IRC to enjoy the holiday without feeling that they
need to rush back to assist upgraders.

Organizational Structure

Xooglers is a blog written by an ex-Google employee. His insight is well written and interesting. I particularly like where he talks about the hiring practices at Google. If you can actually get an organization to run the way he describes operations at Google, I would think it would be an incredibly efficient model!

To understand Google’s hiring policies and organizational structure, it helps to think of employees as cells within the corporate corpus. It’s useful to have cells that serve specific functions when the need arises, but it’s inefficient to have those cells hanging around sucking energy from the rest of the organism if their singular function is no longer required. Better to have cells that can adapt themselves to any situation, solve the problem and then move on to the next issue. Yeah, we’re talking about stem cells.

Tivo finally fixes my biggest complaint…

I can’t tell you how many times a show I wanted to record has not recorded because one of the networks decided to run their show two or three minutes past the hour.

Well according to PVRwire this will no longer be an issue as of software version 7.2.1 thanks to the new overlap protection feature.

New Google Toys

Google released two new Firefox extensions today!
I’ve been hooked on the IE Google toolbar for some time, in fact it is the one feature I really miss when using Firefox….not any more! Today Google released three new extensions for Firefox, they are: Google toolbar, Google Suggest for Firefox search box, and Google send to phone.
You can read more about the extensions at the google labs site.

Also Google has released the maps api for all to use. This is very cool for anyone who needs to add maps or directions to their sites…
